Download Mix
Exclusive extended alternate version of “Tober” from the The Dark Is Rising12″/CD by The Village Orchestra released on Stuff Records in January 2009

Download Track
Ruaridh Law by birth, T.V.O is one of the country’s most meticulous DJs, and as a former member of cult electronica group Marcia Blaine School for Girls, he’s also a superb producer in his own right: most recently showcased by his ability to both release driving techno singles for labels like Stuff Records, and to indulge his experimental side on ambient/found sound albums for Highpoint Lowlife – this year’s I Can Hear The Sirens Again a particular highlight.
Fans of T.V.O.’s past mixes might have an idea of what to expect. This FACT mix starts off slowly with avant garde compositions from the likes of Coil and Alva-Noto, before touching on bass music’s futurist fringes with 8Bitch and Spatial and building seamlessly in energy via tracks by Scuba, Hot City, Neil Landstrumm, Kenny Larkin, Farley Jackmaster Funk and more.
Tracklist:
Coil – Dark Start (Eskaton)
Erstlaub – Broadcasting On Ghost Frequencies (Moving Furniture Records)

Though he often affixes the group moniker “The Alkebulan (or Afrikan) Space Program” to his name, Ras G (a composite of his first initial and a testament to his belief in Rastafari) is the sole captain and crew of this spacecraft. Along with a 21st-century moxie, his collective influences make up what he describes as ghetto sci-fi—an extraterrestrial soundwave transmission of dub, white noise, glitch, off-kilter boom-bap, and sound bites. Incorporating healing tones (specific sound frequencies that are purported to have profound effects on the spirit and body), modal jazz, and ancestral inspiration, Ras G has managed to concoct a sonic brew that defies conventional musical categorization. “As opposed to riding trends and waves, I try to bring forth the music that I really feel,” he explains. “It’s my offering to the world.”
Tracing his fascination with the art of beat-making back to a relative who owned an E-mu SP-1200 drum machine/sampler, Ras G began gravitating towards other area hip-hop hopefuls for inspiration in the late 1990s. Most times, his passion was unrequited. “A lot of them weren’t into the music and the gear as tough as I wanted to be,” he remembers. “Or they were producing music on quality gear and the music wasn’t sounding as good as I thought it could sound. I felt like I could do something better with that stuff.” And with his influences in tow, his present-day cosmic creations can be interpreted as drum & bass being sucked into a black hole (“In Coming”) or celestial binary code (“Desert Fairy”).
Groovement – Ras G Interview:

In 2005, underground L.A. music scene impresario/producer Carlos Niño helped to launch Ras G’s career as a producer by tapping one of his productions for legendary jazz vocalist Dwight Trible’s acclaimed experimental album Love is the Answer. “That was like the lift off,” Shorter recalls. “But it was all kind of weird to me, because that was like one of the fifth or sixth beats that I’d ever made.” Remarkably, Ras G had only just purchased his first beat machine, an MPC-2000XL, the year before. Capitalizing on the buzz surrounding the Trible record, Shorter increased his output and began moving in a new circle of kindred spirits at a monthly soundclash safe haven called Sketchbook at L.A.’s Little Temple Bar.
“Flying Lotus, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Dibiase, and everybody who’s doing it right now on the L.A. scene used to gather there,” he reflects. “We would play beats, b-sides, and crazy stuff. So I used to make beat CDs for the parties so we would have something to listen to when we were outside smoking.” Since then, he’s been featured in the documentary Secondhand Sureshots and has released a slew of albums and EPs for Poo-Bah Records that have garnered him a devout following from Japan to the Netherlands. And since being inducted into FlyLo’s L.A.-based artist collective/label Brainfeeder, which Ras G dubs “the X-Men of future music,” it’s apparent that he’s bound for the exosphere.

“Everybody loves Brotha From Anotha Planet, but that’s something I did last year in the summertime in my kitchen,” he reveals about the creation of his latest album. “So the vibes of that kitchen were recorded on that project.” And though Ras G has enough recorded material for two full-length releases, he’s wary of predicting what vibes his next album will transmit. “Ain’t no telling where we’re going with this music. The inspiration changes quickly—that’s the Afrikan Space Program. We just do it.”

Reso pushing the boundaries of dubstep with his futuristic, innovative sound – elements of garage, 8-bit electro, breaks and more. Skipping through styles effortlessly.
The 25-year-old has been getting much love from Radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbs for almost 3 years now, and has scored serious acclaim for his remixes for the likes of Buraka Som Sistema and Jamie Woon. Lap this up and crank it up loud.
Sum up this podcast in 10 words…
My favourite dubstep: deep techy dubby start, face smashing finish.
What’s your personal favourite track on it?
LFO by Kiko – messes with me everytime, H E A V Y
What’s the special ingredient in this mix?
Black pudding and mushroom sandwiches, bass, bass and robots.
What’s the best gig you’ve played recently?
Glade – It went off – maybe that Bestival or Glastonbury, Love festival crowds – they get stuck right in. I’m just back from a tour in Australia which was (Cue Aussie accent) “fucking heaps good”
What have you got coming up?
I got my new Temjin EP coming on Civil Music, 2×12″ double pack I think! Otacon is gonna see wax on there, will be a taste of things to come and still tear your arse off like Beasts and If Ya Can’t Beat Em. I’m well excited about it! Remix-wise i’ve got Foamo’s War Dance, Drop The Lime and Crookers remixes all on the way soon and I’m gigging all over the country through October and beyond. Then I’ll be warming me toes in the studio finishing my album which set for early 2010 on Civil. I’ve been squirreling away some very special tracks already…you’ve been warned!
Tracklisting:
1. Berlin Call – Von D
2. Doors of Perception – Data
3. Sweat – Untold
4. Third wave – 2562
5. Sketch on Glass – Mount kimble

One of the most talked about producers in the world on the strength of his 12″s for local labels like Stuff, Wireblock and Dress 2 Sweat and his DJ sets that take in everything from 80s R’n'B to 2009 grime, Rustie’s FACT mix comes just over a week before the second birthday of Ballers Social, the clubnight run by his LuckyMe collective, and features The Dream, Terror Danjah, Lil Scrappy and a taste of what’s to come from both his and Hudson Mohawke’s albums.
The birthday takes the form of two nights: first, on September 11, Ballers rolls into Glasgow’s Stereo club with sets from dubstep veteran Jamie Vex’d, whose In System Travel EP is one of the year’s best, Hyperdub tron-garage pair Darkstar, Rustie himself and fellow LuckyMe cohorts The Blessings. Then on the 12, it takes to the same city’s Ivy club, with live sets from Fulgeance and Fox Gut Daata, LuckyMe’s Dema and New York’s premier jerk merchant Dante’s Fried Chicken. Stay tuned to FACT for a second podcast from the collective this week, along with an interview with the Ballers crew and a chance to win t-shirts and guest list for the birthday weekender.

They’ve combined their forces for the good of music fans in order to make Hobbs’ live mix from Barcelona’s Sónar music festival available. The mix is a tough-to-the-core, dubstep-laden exhibition of what both Hobbs and the Sónar festival are all about.

Elevate 2009 artist L-Vis 1990 offers a free mix via Curb Crawlers blog, to which he contributes.
Few artists can bump heavy-bass tunes while nimbly sliding between genres quite like L-Vis 1990 (a.k.a. James Connolly). With partner Bok Bok, he whips together dubstep, bassline, funky, B-more, grime, and more at London’s Night Slugs party, which has played host to friends and guests like Oneman, Kode 9, Crazy Cousinz, Brackles, and Dexplicit. L-Vis 1990′s production work has also been causing quite a stir, from his bootleg “dubblestep” remixes to last year’s self-titled EP to the recently released United Groove EP on Mad Decent.
1. AM Roots – He Africa feat. Fred Mthembu
2. Rishi Romero – African Forest
3. Geeneus – Yellow Tail VIP
4. DVA – Jelly Roll
5. Conan liquid – The King
6. Untold – Just For You (Roska Remix)
7. DJ Gregory – Vasefa (Argy Remix Beats)
9. Karizma – Neccessarry Maddness

Kode9 at Sonar Festival Barcelona 2007
D: Can you expand on your ideas of collective rhythm cultures rather than straight Noise?
K: Yeah… I’m just fascinated by rhythmic collectivity, whether it’s pleasurable or not – just people moving together, differently, in time. I just think there’s something very fundamental or basic that comes before any political affiliation, ideaological affiliation, almost underneath social categories, a basic model of what a collective is. Which is people coming together, joined by one thing, rhythm. And rhythm is a very abstract thing, it’s not just something that makes you move. The way I see it rhythm is something that joins things together.
D: And to do that, it tends to be rhythms which are simple, or less simple?
K: Yeah, that’s a more aesthetic or tactical question… to do with specific music scenes, and how far you can go before a collective falls apart, how much can you fuck up a rhthm before it loses it groove, and these are very pertinent questions in the history of electronic music, aren’t they. How self-indulgent and obsessed can you get about unquantised beats before you make them completely dysfunctional. How asymmetric and disjointed can rhythms go while staying completely 4/4 and completely quantised. This is like a tactical aesthetic question that’s crucial to all electronic dance music cultures. Every single genre has different issues about how you experiment within the genre. At what point does it become a music which is purely for the producers, and the critics, and what point does it lose a dancefloor and so on.
D: How do you feel about the lowest common denominator argument with rhythm, whereby if rhyth is a value in itself, then surely Fat Boy Slim is the best music overall, because more people would dance together on Brighton Beach than anything else…?
K: Rhythmic collectives are never just an issue of size, are they. Never just an issue of quantity. Otherwise, trance, Fat Boy Slim and whatever utter bullshit you care to mention would be the ideal… so I think it’s really about quality rather than quantity. And quality is a very difficult thing to define.
D: Was your jungle set at BLOC, where you only had a certain number of people dancing, but people were really into it, is that the kind of experience which seems more meaningful somehow?
K: No, that was just me pissed off [laughs] And just wanting to do something to make myself feel a bit happier. But I do find myself turning my back on the audience quite a lot, metaphorically. In other words just doing what I think I need to play because that’s what I want to hear And dealing with the consequences of that after the fact.
D: How crucial to the collective rhythmic dynamic are things like rewinds, some kind of interaction?
K: I suppose over the last couple of years I’ve been interested in … don’t release the tension until it’s worth releasing. I’ve enjoyed DJ sets recently where the tension just swells and swells and swells, and don’t allow a release… until.. you’re allowed two or three releases in the whole set. But you’re not just climaxing every two seconds. Because that’s not a climax, that’s just deflation, every two or three seconds. It’s just irritating to be honest, stop start. It’s simple for me, I like dark rooms, I like to be in complete darkness when I play, I like that feeling of intimacy in a room, it doesn’t matter how big the room is, but when it’s dark, and you’re not stopping and starting all the time, you build up this tense energy in the room that makes quite an intimate situation, and makes everyone really sensitive to what’s going on. Whereas if it’s all beer bottles in the air and shouting every three minutres because someone’s just rewound the tune, and moshpits, which is quite common in dubstep these days. I don’t find that particularly intimate.
D: Can you have intimacy in really intense music? If so, which [...]</itunes:summary>
