Meanwhile At The Border Of Fortress Europe

A round-up on reported dead counts of migrants trying to reach European coasts, noborder.org documents incidents where immigrants have died while trying.
The list is by no means complete as it only contains incidents that have been reported in the media. Most of the deaths at the border never make it into the papers. Also it only counts confirmed deaths while in incidents at sea (which make up the majority of the cases) there are often substantial amounts of people who are missing or unaccounted for. It is safe to assume that most of them have also died.
Since starting to collect such incidents in december 2002 the number of victims has risen to 3818. Of these, 588 persons died in 2003, 296 in 2004, 343 in 2005, 653 in 2006, 732 in 2007, 682 in 2008 and 402 in 2009.
Last reported incident in Spain was on 29.Oct.09, where Spanish coast guard has rescued two migrants from a small boat off the south eastern coast of Cartagena. The bodies of two other migrants were retrieved from the boat as well. The surviving passengers were found in a serious condition with dehydration and hypothermia and were transferred to a hospital in Santa Maria del Rosell.
